It was the first evening on our first ever visit to the town of Broken Hill while on a driving holiday. Having had a good evening meal, we felt very satisfied after settling into our cabin. On road the Pajero VRX is all mild-mannered comfort, but hit the tracks and the beast is unleashed. Fun fact: the Mitsubishi Pajero is actually named for a South American feline, the Leopardus pajeros, or pampas cat, a native of the Patagonian plateau in Argentina. Why the Japanese car builder would name a capable 4WD after a small housecat-looking animal that hunts for field mice among fields of straw, who knows.
I have been a fan of Pioneer’s range of hard floor camper trailers ever since I first laid eyes on them. They are neat, solid units with a sleek, no-nonsense, high-riding body. One look at them and you know it’s the kind of camper you want behind you when you’re tackling hard days on tough tracks in the fourbie; one in which you can look forward to a soft bed and a hot meal.
Mt Isa is a very interesting town. Modern history tells us about the discovery of a wealth of minerals by John Campbell Miles in 1923 and the development of Mt Isa Mines. Mary Kathleen, another mining town about 60km west of Mt Isa, was a closed town and when the mine closed, Mary Kathleen was dismantled.
